The authorities of Turkmenistan prepared a "Potemkin village" specifically for the visit of the US ambassador. Among other things, English teachers were dressed as vendors—all to make the best impression on the guests.

The authorities in the Balkan region of Turkmenistan, upon learning about the visit of US Ambassador Elizabeth Rood, decided to create an illusion of prosperity. According to The Times of Central Asia, English teachers were dressed as vendors at the local market to make the best possible impression on the diplomat.

During the visit, which took place last week, Ambassador Rood met with local authorities and entrepreneurs, including representatives of American companies operating in the region.

The local authorities wanted to present their region in the best possible light.

Preparations for the visit

In addition to disguising the teachers, the market stalls were abundantly stocked, even though in reality, the bazaars face problems with supply of basic food products.

Additionally, the authorities banned vehicles manufactured before 2015 from traveling on public roads. In workplaces and schools, discussions were held about appropriate answers to questions concerning living conditions and supplies.

Journalists from Radio Svoboda did not receive a comment from the authorities on these actions. However, such practices are known in Turkmenistan during visits from important personalities. It is unclear whether Ambassador Rood had the opportunity to assess the English proficiency of the "vendors," as the media focused on official meetings.

The visit of the US ambassador aimed to strengthen relations between the countries and discuss economic cooperation. Despite the authorities' efforts, the reality of everyday life in Turkmenistan remains a challenge for many residents.
