The Turks increasingly focus on domestic projects due to significant challenges in acquiring American fighter jets. Notably, on May 5, 2024, the KAAN, a 5th generation fighter jet equipped with stealth technology, soared through the skies for the second time, reaching an altitude of 9,843 ft. Here, we delve into the capabilities of this remarkable aircraft.

Despite the US administration's slightly softened stance on Turkey's potential acquisition of F-16 fighters, the likelihood of this European nation rejoining the F-35 program remains slim. This backdrop makes the development of the KAAN even more critical, positioning it as an alternative to American models. Interestingly, in its design, it bears a resemblance to the F-22 Raptor.

KAAN takes flight again

KAAN's initial flight on February 20, 2024, was followed by rapid data analysis, necessary adjustments, and the decision for a second trial. This subsequent flight lasted for 14 minutes and achieved the same altitude as before. The KAAN project leaders have expressed satisfaction with the flight's success and the valuable data collected, which will inform future test preparations.

"We are excited and proud. Today marks another landmark moment in Turkish aviation and defense history. Our fighter jet has successfully carried out its second flight. Following its inaugural flight on February 20, where it completed all planned objectives, today's achievements were made possible by thorough evaluation and analysis of the initial data," stated Haluk Gorgun, head of the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SBB).

Key features of the KAAN fighter jet

The KAAN has dimensions of 69 ft in length, 46 ft in wingspan, and 20 ft in height. It is powered by two General Electric engines, which are expected to enable pilots to reach speeds of approximately Mach 1.8. Additionally, with a design that emphasizes adaptability to all weather conditions, KAAN's range is set to exceed 621 miles.

The KAAN is designed to be a formidable fighter jet with an AESA radar for detecting hostile targets, electronic warfare capabilities, advanced navigational features, and IRST sensors. Its armament compatibility includes air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and bombs, showcasing its versatility in combat scenarios.

The Turkish defense industry plans to produce the first 20 units of KAAN by 2028, marking a significant step forward in Turkey's pursuit of self-reliance in defense technology.
