Trump's presidential start marred by BRICS blunder with Spain
Donald Trump has officially begun his presidency in the United States. After his inauguration, the politician signed several urgent executive orders. During this task, Trump made a significant error. The new occupant of the White House mistakenly included Spain in the BRICS countries.
Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States on Monday, January 20. In his inaugural address, he focused primarily on the country's domestic policy. He announced plans for the deportation of undocumented immigrants, strengthening border security, increasing oil and gas production, distancing from the Green New Deal, and recognizing only two genders.
Trump then proceeded to the Oval Office, signing a stack of various documents. Among them was the declaration of a state of emergency on the southern border of the United States and the suspension of accepting refugees and asylum seekers.
Trump's significant error: His statement on Spain
Donald Trump has just started his presidency and has already made a notable mistake. In a video circulating online, he can be seen conversing briefly with one of his collaborators. Trump declared that Spain is part of BRICS, saying, "They are BRICS nation. Do you know what a BRICS nation is? You will figure it out," stated the U.S. President.
BRICS is a group of economically cooperative countries, initially founded by Russia, China, Brazil, and India. South Africa joined them in 2011. BRICS aims to develop an economic system that competes with Western countries, with proposals such as creating a new currency alternative to the dollar. The community also advocates for UN reforms. This bloc aims to attract countries from the so-called global south, comprising developing nations in Asia, Africa, and South America.
In recent years, countries like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates have joined BRICS. Although Argentina was expected to join, the decision was ultimately reversed. On January 1, 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan became partner countries of BRICS. Spain is not a member of this group, and there is no indication that it will be in the near future.
