Trump's new order escalates fight over transgender athletes
Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender athletes from participating in women's sporting events. This represents another step by the American administration in restricting the rights of transgender individuals.
The executive order signed by Donald Trump directs federal agencies, including the Department of Justice, to interpret regulations as prohibiting transgender girls and women from participating in sports categories designated for women, reports "The Guardian."
The order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” enforces new rules immediately.
Trump declared that with this order, “the war on women's sports is over.” It marks another controversial move following previous actions, such as the ban on gender transitions for individuals under the age of 19, recalls "The Guardian."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump expects the American Olympic Committee and sports associations to no longer allow transgender men to participate in women's sports competitions. However, she did not answer how Trump's new decree will affect the 2028 Summer Olympics planned for Los Angeles.
When signing the executive order, Donald Trump was surrounded by women and girls.
Meanwhile, the transgender community is already feeling the effects of the actions of the new United States administration. Some hospitals in the U.S. have stopped providing care for transgender youth, and prisons have isolated transgender women, informing them that they will be transferred to men's prisons after losing access to gender-affirming medical procedures.
