Wearing a shirt with a completely unbuttoned collar, the former President was observed trying to wrestle with his unruly hair – which isn't surprising considering residents in Iowa have been battling with recent blizzards and strong winds. His stride, too, was noticeably wavering.
"It's very cold outside. We have a lot of meetings tonight, a lot of enormous support, but it's awful out there," Trump said, addressing the crowd who had come to welcome him.
In summing up this unusual episode, the Politico journalist maintained that Trump was in a "relaxed mood".
Trump pointed out the extreme weather conditions in Iowa by saying, "We've had record cold weather and record snowfall." This prompted him to cancel two scheduled rallies in Sioux City and Atlantic on Saturday.
Trump takes a lead in the polls
Trump had made the trip to the hotel in Iowa to assemble with his supporters, and he certainly has a significant number of them.
According to the latest poll before the primaries, Trump has the backing of 48% of Republicans in Iowa (the survey was conducted for the newspaper "Des Moines Register"). This signifies his substantial lead (28%) over his main rival, Nikki Haley. The Iowa primaries are set to take place on January 15th.
