Trump's bold moves: Mount McKinley returns, Gulf renamed
The first decisions made by Donald Trump after his inauguration are surprising. The American president ordered the change of the name of the highest peak in the USA. Mount McKinley has returned, replacing its former name, Denali, which was used until a few days ago. Additionally, the Gulf of Mexico is now a thing of the past. From this point forward, it's known as the American Gulf.
Donald Trump became the 47th president of the United States yesterday. The Republican has already made his first decisions, some concerning geography. The American leader has changed the names of several iconic points on the map of the USA.
After 10 years, Trump changed the name of the highest peak in the United States. Denali has once again become Mount McKinley. The massif, measuring 20,310 feet above sea level, was named in honor of Republican President William McKinley from 1896 to 2015.
On August 28, 2015, the U.S. Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Sally Jewell, restored the mountain's original name: Denali. This word comes from the term deenaalee, which, in the language of the indigenous tribes of North America, means "great." Yesterday, Trump ordered that this original name would no longer apply.
The Gulf of Mexico has become history. Now it's the Gulf of America
Donald Trump went a step further. He decided that as of January 20, 2025, the Gulf of Mexico would disappear from the map of the United States. Now Americans must get used to the new name: the American Gulf.
The changes to the names of the highest peak in North America and the gulf located in the region of the coasts of the USA, Mexico, and Cuba are not a surprise. Donald Trump announced this during his election campaign, as well as before his inauguration.
In addition to changing the names of the mountain and the gulf, Trump also spoke about taking control of Greenland and the Panama Canal. He addressed the latter topic during his inaugural speech as President of the USA.
