Trump's bold claim: Peace in Gaza by 2025 if elected
Donald Trump faces a test of whether he can stop the war within a few days, as he promised, said a senior Hamas official, Sami Abu Zuhri, quoted by Reuters on Wednesday.
"We call on Trump to learn from the mistakes of President Joe Biden," announced Abu Zuhri.
At the end of October, the Times of Israel revealed details of Trump's conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which took place in July at the Republican's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Trump allegedly announced that if he wins the presidential election, he wants the war in the Gaza Strip to end by the time he returns to the White House in January 2025.
What's next for the conflict in the Gaza Strip?
During the election campaign, the Republican presidential candidate repeatedly called on Israel to quickly end the war.
According to the Associated Press, Trump has so far secured 267 electoral votes, while the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has secured 224. This means that the Republican candidate is only three electoral votes away from victory.
The war in the Gaza Strip erupted after a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed approximately 1,200 people and led to the kidnapping of 251 others. According to local Palestinian authorities, more than 43,300 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the Israeli offensive against Hamas. The Gaza Strip is in ruins, and most of its residents have become internally displaced persons.
