Trump's attempt to oust election official sparks legal clash
Donald Trump attempted to remove the Democratic commissioner from the Federal Election Commission. Weintraub stated that the action was illegal and that she had decided to remain in her position.
In a post on Platform X, Weintraub reported that on January 31, she received a letter signed by Trump informing her, "You are hereby removed as a member of the Federal Election Commission, effective immediately."
Weintraub, affiliated with the Democratic Party, wrote, "There’s a legal way to replace FEC commissioners – this isn’t it." She added, "I’ve been lucky to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That’s not changing any time soon."
Confusion with the Election Commission
The commission employs over 300 staff members and is led by six commissioners. Weintraub has been an FEC commissioner since 2002. The president appoints commissioners and must receive Senate approval.
According to the law, no more than three commissioners can be from the same party, and at least four votes are needed from them to make an official commission decision.
