Trump taps Devin Nunes for top intelligence advisory role
Donald Trump appointed his ally Devin Nunes as the chairman of the Intelligence Advisory Board on Saturday. Nunes currently heads Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.
Nunes has been considered one of Trump's defenders for many years. As Reuters pointed out, when he was the chairman of the committee in the lower house of Congress, he claimed that the FBI conspired against Trump during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
During the Republican's first term in the White House, Nunes led the House Intelligence Committee. Now, he will continue his role as director of Truth Social while simultaneously serving on the advisory board.
He is to provide Trump with an 'independent assessment of the effectiveness" of the intelligence community
Donald Trump stated, "Devin will draw on his experience as former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and his key role in exposing the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, to provide me with independent assessments of the effectiveness and propriety of the U.S. Intelligence Community’s activities."
The nomination came two weeks after Trump, who will be sworn in as president on January 20, appointed Kash Patel as the director of the FBI, replacing the current head of the agency, Christopher Wray.
Trump also appointed Richard Grenell, former intelligence head in his administration, as his special envoy; Troy Edgar, a manager from IBM and former Department of Homeland Security official, as the deputy head of that department; and businessman Bill White as the U.S. ambassador to Belgium.
