Referring to Donald Trump as an unpredictable character is an "obvious obviousness." In recent days, the President-elect of the United States has introduced several topics into public debate, revealing his worldview. These may suggest the decisions Trump intends to make following his inauguration scheduled for January 20.

The winner of the November elections called for measures including the return of the Panama Canal to the United States. Donald Trump also emphasized that controlling Greenland is essential for national security and global freedom. He declared that the island should be brought under American jurisdiction.

Donald Trump not only wants to acquire new territories for the United States but also to influence the naming of certain areas. A recording is circulating online where the President-elect expresses his desire to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf.

"We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country," Donald Trump said.

Donald Trump is making it clear to his neighbors that the USA plays a key role on the international stage. The future president is also demanding that Mexico stop migration across the southern US border. He has additionally threatened both the southern neighbor and Canada with high tariffs, reportedly intending to use this "weapon" against European Union countries as well.

Leaders react to Trump's declarations

It is important to recall that the leaders of Panama and Denmark completely disagree with Trump's demands. Panama is not willing to cede its canal, and Copenhagen has no intention of trading Greenland.

The reasons why Trump is interested in both areas are quite significant. The Panama Canal is a crucial point for navigation between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Meanwhile, Greenland holds strategic importance, as melting glaciers open new trade routes. The potential for exploration of natural resources is also present.

The idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico perfectly illustrates Trump's oversized ego, aiming to present himself as a strong leader. It's also important to remember the Monroe Doctrine in American tradition, according to which the USA claimed the right to precedence in stabilizing situations on the American continent. This doctrine asserted that other powers were not allowed to expand in the Western Hemisphere, while the United States was to refrain from interference in European conflicts.
