Trump stands firm on China tariffs ahead of crucial talks
President Donald Trump firmly rejected the possibility of lowering the 145% tariffs on China, a move that could facilitate trade negotiations with Beijing. A meeting regarding this issue is scheduled for the coming days in Switzerland.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated he would not consider reducing the high tariffs on China, which currently stand at 145%. As reported by CNBC, Trump responded, "No," when asked if he was considering easing the tariffs to motivate China to negotiate. His decision was made just three days before a meeting between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart in Switzerland.
China has confirmed that the U.S. initiated the meeting, and Beijing remains strongly opposed to Trump's tariff increases.
When asked about expectations for the talks in Europe, the U.S. President stated, "We'll see how that all turns out, but it's got to be a fair deal. But think of it, we're losing a trillion dollars and that was a big part of the $5 million a day."
The meeting in Switzerland aims to discuss trade and economic issues between the U.S. and China. Despite the tensions, both sides strive to find common ground on financial matters.
However, Trump does not intend to compromise on the tariff issue, which could impede reaching an agreement.
