Trump renames Gulf of Mexico, sparks international debate
In line with a recent executive order by President Donald Trump, changes are already being introduced in the U.S. The Gulf of Mexico has been renamed the Gulf of America.
In the United States, the Gulf of Mexico has officially been renamed the Gulf of America. "As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley," announced the Department of the Interior.
As Reuters notes, the name change for the Gulf of Mexico is unlikely to gain international recognition. Mexico, which shares the gulf with the United States, stated that the internationally recognized name has been used in maritime navigation for centuries, as pointed out by NEXTA.
Earlier, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, jokingly suggested renaming a part of North America to match the way it appeared on maps from 1607. - Why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, no? - Sheinbaum said.
It is worth noting that Trump previously announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, stating that the new name is "appropriate."
