Donald Trump stated that "American possession and control over Greenland is an absolute necessity." According to him, this is essential "for the purposes of national security and freedom around the world."
"For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," Donald Trump said on the Truth Social platform. He also announced the nomination of former Elon Musk associate and billionaire Ken Howery as ambassador to Copenhagen.
Previously, Trump's idea was considered a joke
During his first term, Trump attempted to buy Greenland, but the authorities of Denmark and Greenland rejected the proposal. This idea was considered a joke, although, according to contemporary reports by the "Wall Street Journal," Trump revisited the topic several times "with varying levels of seriousness."
In Greenland, there is the Thule American Air Base, which in 2023 was renamed a Space Force base. According to the AP, Trump was not the first U.S. president to propose buying the world's largest island, as President Harry Truman made a similar offer in 1945.
Ken Howery, the new candidate for U.S. ambassador to Denmark, is a former associate of Elon Musk and a co-founder of PayPal. During Trump's first presidency, he served as the U.S. ambassador to Sweden. According to reports, he has been a friend of Musk's "for decades."
