Shortly after the phone conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, an alarm was announced in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, on Tuesday evening. Explosions and anti-aircraft gunfire could be heard.

Attack on Ukraine. Sirens in Kyiv

Sirens wailed about 1.5 hours after the end of the conversation. The alarm was related to the threat of ballistic missile strikes and drones appearing over the Ukrainian capital.

"Explosions can be heard on the street"

A correspondent in downtown Kyiv heard explosions and bursts of fire from heavy automatic weapons.

"The metro in Kyiv now. Trains have stopped at underground stations. They are not reaching the surface. Explosions can be heard on the street," writes journalist Piotr Kaszuwara, who is in Kyiv.

Trump and Putin had a phone discussion earlier on Tuesday during which they agreed, among other things, that efforts towards peace in Ukraine would begin with a ceasefire concerning strikes on energy and infrastructure.
