Trump pulls US out of Paris climate accord again
Donald Trump has fulfilled another of his promises. As he did at the beginning of his first term, the politician has decided to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. A UN spokesperson confirmed the receipt of the letter regarding this withdrawal. The agreement's primary goal is to combat climate change.
For the first time, Trump withdrew the USA from the agreement in 2017. His decision was later reversed by the Joe Biden administration. Now Trump has decided to take this step once more.
- I can confirm that the United States has notified the Secretary-General about withdrawing from the Paris Agreement - said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric. The withdrawal will take effect on January 27, 2026.
Dujarric emphasized that the UN remains committed to achieving the Paris Agreement's goals, which include limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius (approximately 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).
What does the Paris climate agreement entail?
The Paris Agreement requires signatory countries to present new and more ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions every five years. According to the agreement, the updated plans must be submitted by February of next year.
The Paris Agreement came into force on November 4, 2016, after being ratified by at least 55 countries responsible for at least 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
