Trump lashes out at bishop after calls for compassion
Donald Trump harshly criticized Bishop Mariann Budde for her remarks during Tuesday's service at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Budde highlighted the need for Trump to protect migrants and LGBTQ individuals. Her words caused a stir online, and the U.S. President clearly did not appreciate them.
U.S. President Donald Trump labeled Washington's Bishop Mariann Budde as "nasty" after she criticized his plans to deport undocumented immigrants and restrict LGBTQ rights.
Trump described her as a representative of the "radical left" and a "Left hard line hater" of his policies.
"She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one. She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
She addressed Trump directly
During Tuesday's sermon at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., Budde appealed to Trump to show mercy for immigrants and sexual minorities.
"In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives," Budde emphasized.
The bishop also urged Trump to show compassion for undocumented immigrants, noting that they perform essential low-skilled jobs and services in the United States.
In a later interview with CNN, Budde said that the groups she mentioned "are our fellow human beings, and that they have been portrayed throughout the political campaign in the harshest light."
"I wanted to respond, as gently as possible, with a reminder of your humanity and your place in our broader community," explained Budde.
