Trump inauguration shifts indoors as polar vortex grips nation
Over 120 million Americans will face extreme cold, with temperatures dropping as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Meteorologists warn that it will be colder than in Greenland.
Due to the frigid weather, the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump as president scheduled for Monday has been moved to the Capitol Rotunda. Originally, it was to be held outdoors. It's predicted that the temperature will drop to 25 degrees Fahrenheit, but the wind chill will make it feel like 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Extreme conditions in many states
According to the "Washington Post," about 30 states and nearly 50 million people might experience temperatures below minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The frigid temperatures will begin this weekend and continue through most of next week. The polar vortex will also bring snow and icy roads to the Midwest and Northeastern regions of the United States.
Temperature drops ranging from minus 20 to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit threaten residents in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. This kind of cold could lead to frostbite on exposed skin within 10 to 20 minutes. Areas from Illinois to Maine will experience temperatures ranging from minus 0.4 to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Colder than Greenland
Record low temperatures are possible on Tuesday and Wednesday morning in cities such as Pittsburgh, Morgantown, and Binghamton. On Monday, factoring in the wind chill, the temperature may feel like minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit in North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Next week, it will be colder in the U.S. than in Nuuk, Greenland.
