Trump eyes Greenland for US control amid military hints
President-elect Donald Trump did not rule out the possibility of military intervention concerning the Panama Canal and Greenland. He expressed his desire for both areas to be under United States control.

"We need them for economic security," said the future President of the USA to reporters. He stated that he would not rule out the possibility of military action, acknowledging that circumstances might necessitate such measures.
Earlier, Donald Trump's son visited the island. "Greenland is beautiful," he wrote on platform X. As Greenlandic and Danish media reported earlier, talks are planned between Trump Jr. and the leader of the influential Social Democratic Siumut Party, Erik Jensen. This politician officially invited Donald Trump to visit the island at the end of December last year.
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, canceled a planned visit to Copenhagen on Wednesday, where he was supposed to meet King Frederick X of Denmark.
A commentator from the Danish newspaper Berlingske described Trump Jr.'s trip to Greenland as a blow to the Danish government’s dignity. Bent Winther pointed out that, even though it was presented as a private visit by the president-elect’s son, the underlying intent was unmistakable.
He reminded readers that Denmark is responsible for Greenland's foreign policy and security.
In late December, Donald Trump appointed billionaire Ken Howery, a close associate of Elon Musk, as ambassador to Copenhagen. He underscored the critical importance of securing control over Greenland, describing it as essential for national security and global freedom.
Simultaneously, right before Donald Trump's conference, Musk wrote on platform X that "if the people of Greenland want to be part of America," he hopes "they would be most welcome."
On Wednesday, December 25th, Trump claimed that the people of Greenland wish for their island to become part of the United States and suggested that Canadians could reduce their taxes by 60 percent if their country were to join as a U.S. state.
Trump extended Christmas greetings to the people of Greenland, highlighting their importance to the United States for national security reasons. He also claimed that Greenlanders desired a U.S. presence on the island and asserted that it would happen.
This was his latest comment on the subject after announcing the nomination for ambassador to Denmark and stating that the USA must "own" this largest island in the world. Despite Trump's statements, the Prime Minister of Greenland stated that he has no intention of annexing the island to the USA.
