Trump extends Biden's Russian sanctions amid ongoing threats
The administration of President Donald Trump announced the continuation of the state of emergency, initially implemented by Joe Biden's team due to actions by the government in Moscow considered harmful. This decision extends the current sanctions against the Russian Federation for another year.
Official notice of this was published in the "Federal Register." The document refers to executive orders issued by former President Joe Biden in 2021 and 2022.
The Democrat declared the state of emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This action was in response to an "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States." It was a response to the "harmful foreign activities of the Government of the Russian Federation."
These activities included interfering in democratic electoral processes, conducting cyberattacks against America and its allies, using corruption to influence other governments, and attacks on individuals with differing views and members of the media.
Other allegations included undermining security in countries and regions significant to U.S. national security, as well as violating international law norms, including the principle of territorial integrity of sovereign states.
This situation continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States, as highlighted in the published document. This justifies maintaining the existing emergency measures for another year.
U.S. blocks Russian assets
The MSN news service points out that President Biden's decree to implement the state of emergency was primarily aimed at blocking Russian assets under U.S. jurisdiction and imposing economic sanctions.
According to sources from Fox News, the sitting president concluded that Putin was deliberately delaying a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As a result, the administration in Washington is considering tightening the existing sanctions against Russia. Trump personally threatened to impose secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil.
