Is Russia playing Trump? Firm words from the President of the U.S

"'Nobody is playing me' in peace talks," said Trump, who emphasized that he is "trying to help" and wants to bring about peace in the East.

Earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that the United States might abandon attempts to achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia if no signals that it is possible appear soon. Rubio emphasized that the U.S. must determine whether peace is achievable within a few weeks. If not, the country will need to focus on other priorities.

Trump agreed with Rubio's statement, adding that the war in Ukraine claims lives daily, and those who do not strive to end it are "horrible." However, the President did not disclose how much time the U.S. is giving itself to decide on further engagement in the peace process.

Trump's election promises

During the 2024 election campaign, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. However, after the elections, his position became less categorical.

Keith Kellogg, special envoy for peace in Ukraine, announced that the new president plans to end the conflict within 100 days of the January 20 inauguration. On inauguration day, Trump emphasized that he intends to end the war "as soon as possible."

Putin announced an "Easter truce"

While the U.S. Secretary of State threatened to withdraw from peace talks regarding the war in Ukraine, on Saturday, Vladimir Putin announced an "Easter truce." According to the Kremlin leader, it was supposed to be in effect from Saturday to Monday.

Russia announced a cessation of military actions, expecting a similar move from Ukraine. However, Ukrainian authorities emphasize that Russian drones continued to operate over their territory, undermining Moscow's intentions.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, criticized the truce proposal, pointing out the lack of sincerity from Russia. In his view, Putin's actions were an attempt to manipulate public opinion, rather than a genuine pursuit of peace. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is ready for talks but expects real actions, not just declarations.

In the international context, the Easter truce met with mixed reactions. Some experts indicate that it is part of a larger strategy by Russia to gain an advantage in negotiations. Meanwhile, Ukraine, supported by Western partners, continues defensive actions, emphasizing the need for a permanent and unconditional ceasefire.
