Trump comments: America's cardinal Prevost becomes pope Leo XIV

What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment," wrote President Donald Trump on the Truth platform.
A new pope from America
On Thursday, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signifying the election of the new pope. The cardinals made their decision during the fourth vote. Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica and announced the traditional formula, "Habemus Papam!".
Then Cardinal Robert Prevost, who is the first pope from North America, appeared to the faithful. He has taken the name Leo XIV.
Cardinal Robert Prevost was born in Chicago and is an Augustinian. His career includes many years of work in Peru, where he served as prefect at a religious seminary in Trujillo.
From 2001 to 2013, he was the Prior General of the Augustinians. He received his episcopal ordination in 2014. Since 2023, he has served as the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and the President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
Cardinal Prevost, as the new Pope Leo XIV, will continue the work of his predecessor, Pope Francis. Since October 2023, he has been a member of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and several dicasteries, including those for Evangelization, Doctrine of the Faith, Eastern Churches, Clergy, Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, Culture and Education, and Legal Texts.
