Trump claims he can end Ukraine war, Rubio urges concessions
President of the USA, Donald Trump, referred to his promise to end the war in Ukraine in one day. "I have another half a day left. We'll see.," he joked. The new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said that each side of the conflict will have to make some concessions.
In his inaugural speech, Donald Trump did not mention the war in Ukraine. "I am most concerned that in Trump's speech, the issues of Europe and Ukraine were not addressed at all," commented political scientist Prof. Andrzej Mania in an interview with WP.
While signing documents in the Oval Office, the new president was asked by reporters about his campaign promise to end the war in Ukraine the day after taking office. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly assured that he would end Russia's war against Ukraine within 24 hours of becoming president.
"Well, this is one half a day. I have another half a day left. We'll see," stated Donald Trump with a broad smile.
On Monday, Donald Trump also confirmed that he plans to have talks with Vladimir Putin soon to end the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible.
He added that Putin "cannot be delighted" with how the war is going, estimating Russian war losses at a million.
The Secretary of State on concessions from both sides
Just after being confirmed by the Senate as Secretary of State, Marco Rubio said he could not set a timeline for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, he added that each side will have to make concessions.
"I don’t — couldn’t put a time frame on it, other than to say that anytime you bring an end to a conflict between two sides, neither of whom can achieve their maximum goals, each side is going to have to give up something," said Marco Rubio.
He did not specify exactly what Ukraine's concession should be.
"We’re not going to get ahead of ourselves talking about negotiations, and what these negotiations at this level, with these sorts of stakes, are best conducted through diplomacy, and, you know, not in public forums. And obviously the countries involved, both the Russians and the Ukrainians, will have, they’ll have to make ultimate decisions about what they’re what they agreed to," Rubio said.
