On Thursday, some employees of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) in the USA received layoff notices, which immediately resulted in a loss of access to their work email accounts. According to NBC News, the next day the administration decided to reverse these layoffs, but there was a lack of contact information for the former employees.

NNSA officials appealed to current employees to help relay information to those affected by the layoffs, asking them to use personal email addresses. The Department of Energy, which oversees the NNSA, has not yet commented on this situation.

The layoffs were part of a broader policy by the Donald Trump administration aimed at reducing public sector jobs. These decisions were made by a unit of the Government Efficiency Department led by Elon Musk.

Mass layoffs in government agencies have sparked controversy and have been challenged in American courts. There are already over 60 lawsuits against the Trump administration. These reforms have been criticized by Democrats and labor unions.

Layoffs in the USA

These events coincided with a Russian drone attack on the Chernobyl power plant, underscoring the importance of the NNSA's work in monitoring nuclear threats. Layoffs also impacted the Department of Homeland Security, which laid off over 400 employees.

The Donald Trump administration signed an order requiring American government agencies to collaborate with Elon Musk to reduce employment in the U.S. administration.
