Caring for your Monstera: A step-by-step guide

Only a few years ago, Monstera was an exotic plant that was hard to find, only available in specialized gardening stores. It soon gained popularity and is now accessible even at local supermarkets. Cultivating Monstera is straightforward. Simply provide it with a suitable sunny spot and watch it grow bigger every year.

Ensure that your Monstera is located in a spot with diffused light for ample leaf production. Use green plant soil - this best suits its needs. You can procure this soil from any garden store, with 10 liters costing around $3. A drainage pot is crucial, too, as it prevents overwatering—a condition that could severely harm the plant. When watering, pour a small amount directly into the soil.

Water your Monstera properly: Watch it grow enormous

Monstera grows relatively slowly, producing just 2-4 leaves per year. But by providing suitable growth conditions, you can expect it to reach about 8 feet in 8-10 years. The growth process can be sped up with regular application of homemade fertilizer. You can prepare one simply with bananas, black tea, and parsley—all rich in phosphorus and potassium, minerals vital for Monstera growth.

Preparing these fertilizers is straightforward. Simply steep a sachet of black tea in boiling water. Once cooled, pour the tea over your Monstera. For the parsley, simply cook it until tender without adding any salt or other spices. Once cooled, pour the broth directly into the soil.

And what about the bananas? All you need are the peels. Cut them into small pieces, pour boiling water over them, and let them sit in a dark, dry place for 24 hours. Then, dilute the concoction at a 1:1 ratio with water. Feed it one of these homemade fertilizers at least once a month to accelerate your Monstera's growth.
