Transform your dirty washing machine into a sparkling clean with simple home remedies

The drum of a washing machine is known as one of the most contaminated places within a home. Dust, dirt, and other impurities that were previously attached to your clothing settle inside. These particles are deposited on the drum, rubber parts, and even in the filter. If the machine isn't cleaned regularly, this could lead to clogging and mold formation on the surface.

Unsure of how to clean a washing machine? Here's a simple, affordable, and effective method that will leave the interior of your appliance sparkling clean. You won't need any expensive products; most likely, you already have everything needed at home.

Clean the drum using a high-temperature programme

Most modern washing machines are equipped with a self-cleaning program. You activate this feature to clean the drum. Detergents are usually not necessary for this process. But how do you clean a washing machine that doesn't possess this feature? It's straightforward. Remove all clothes from the drum and place two dishwasher tablets inside. These tablets contain powerful cleaning agents, including citric acid and baking soda.

These ingredients work to remove mold accumulations and impurities from within the machine while also eliminating any unpleasant odors that emanate from the drum. After depositing the tablet, set the washing program. The temperature should be between 140 to 194 degrees Fahrenheit. In conjunction with the high temperature, the cleaning agents ensure that all bacteria and impurities are completely eradicated.

Deodorise using the detergent compartment

Lack dishwasher tablets? There's no need to worry. You can replace them with three readily available substitutes. The first substitute is baking soda. Sprinkle 3.5 ounces of baking soda into the detergent compartment and set the machine to the highest possible temperature. Baking soda will disinfect the machine's interior and neutralise unpleasant odours.

The second substitute is vinegar, which functions similarly to baking soda. Pour one cup of vinegar into the detergent compartment and run the wash cycle. Vinegar also helps remove mould accumulations and eliminates the unpleasant smell of dampness. Alternatively, vinegar can be replaced with citric acid. Once the cleaning programme is completed, your washing machine will be as good as new. Repeat the procedure monthly, and your appliance will remain in good working condition for many years.
