Tragic sightseeing tour: Helicopter crash claims six lives
The helicopter pilot who crashed over the Hudson River was a veteran of the U.S. Navy: 36-year-old Sean Johnson. He moved to New York to continue his aviation career. "I'm just at loss for words. I don't even know what happened," his wife told Gothamist.
On Thursday, a disaster occurred in New York. A helicopter with six people on board crashed into the Hudson River. The five-person family flew to the USA from Barcelona to celebrate their child's birthday: Agustin Escobar, his wife Merce Camprubi Montal, and their three children. The couple held important international positions at Siemens Mobility. The flight was intended as a sightseeing tour, a daily occurrence over New York.
Who was piloting the helicopter that broke apart in the air and fell into the river is already known. As reported by "The New York Times," it was 36-year-old Sean Johnson, a veteran of the Navy SEALs, an elite unit of the U.S. Navy. A month before the tragedy, he had posted a video on Facebook proudly piloting the same type of helicopter over Manhattan.
Johnson recently moved to New York to advance his career in aviation. Before relocating, he worked as a celebrity bodyguard and with helicopter manufacturing companies. He was originally from Chicago.
The pilot's wife, Kathryn Johnson, told Gothamist that her husband had always dreamed of flying. "I'm just at loss for words. I don't even know what happened," she said.
