Tragic shark attack claims life of teen on Australian beach
A tragedy occurred on Woorim Beach in the Australian state of Queensland when a shark attacked a 17-year-old girl. Despite the rapid response from witnesses and emergency services, the teenager did not survive. Australian media reports indicate that the attack occurred roughly 100 yards from the shore.
The incident unfolded while the girl was spending time with friends. During her swim in the ocean, about 100 yards from the shore, she was attacked by a shark, which inflicted injuries around her chest and head.
Witnesses acted swiftly, pulling the teenager to the shore and calling emergency services. Unfortunately, despite immediate efforts to resuscitate her, she passed away 15 minutes after the attack.
The beach, popular among surfers, has been closed until further notice. "Sharks are observed here every day. It's a common occurrence," said one of the witnesses to the Courier-Mail in Brisbane.
Another shark attack in Australia
This incident marks the third shark attack in the region within the past six weeks. Earlier in January, a 28-year-old surfer was attacked at Granites Beach in South Australia and did not survive. Just a few days before that, a 40-year-old pastor died while fishing in the Keppel Bay Islands National Park in Queensland.
The frequency of shark attacks has risen sharply. Since 1791, there have been over 1,200 shark attacks in Australia, with more than 250 of them being fatal. Additionally, in the past two years, South Australia has seen a spike in shark attacks.
Authorities urge residents and tourists to be cautious when swimming in ocean areas. They also consider implementing new technologies to monitor shark presence near popular swimming locations.
