Tragic mix‑up in South Africa: Preschoolers hospitalized after consuming rat poison

Hospital authorities disclosed that out of the 41 children assessed, 17 required overnight observation at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital on Monday afternoon. The remaining 24 were released in satisfactory condition and sent home.
On the same day, another food poisoning incident led to the hospitalization of 10 individuals, including two adults and eight children, in Johannesburg, indicating a worrying trend.
Escalation of food-related incidents in South Africa
The alarming occurrence of these two mass poisonings has elevated the total count of food-related incidents in the country to 863 since last October, tragically resulting in 11 fatalities.
Authorities in Gauteng province are urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant against food poisoning hazards. They recommend prompt medical attention for anyone exhibiting symptoms such as fever, chills, cramps, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
