The tragic incident took place at Martin's supermarket in Elkhart, northern Indiana. Three people lost their lives, including the attacker, and two police officers were injured. The officers, who were taken to the hospital, are reported to be in stable condition.

A police spokeswoman stated that law enforcement is interviewing witnesses to understand the circumstances of the shooting. Local media, such as WNDU-TV, are sharing accounts from people who were at the scene.

Pregnant mother Erin Swary, who was in the store during the shooting, described her experience. Initially, she thought a balloon had burst, but when she saw everyone lying on the floor, she followed suit.

"I’d say there were six to eight more shots afterward, one after another. I just lay on the ground, completely paralyzed," she said.

"Heroic rescuers"

Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson issued a statement asking residents to pray for the victims, including the two injured police officers, whom he called heroic rescuers.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun stated on social media that he remains in contact with local and state law enforcement regarding the shooting.
