According to Miami-Dade police, just before 2 a.m., 911 callers reported that there were two children unresponsive in an SUV in the northbound lanes of the highway near the Turnpike extension, which led to officers and fire rescue crews responding to the scene.

Police verified that a 3-year-old boy and girl, who were fraternal twins, were taken to Jackson North Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. The cause of their death has yet to be disclosed.

Authorities have stated that, at a particular moment, the woman driving the vehicle containing the children leaped from the overpass, landing on the train tracks beneath.

According to WPLG Local 10 "despite the considerable fall, the driver survived and was transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition".

- Our investigators are working to piece this tragic incident together. They have many, many questions that they’re working to find the answers to - Detective Andre Martin told reporters at the scene. And added: "The familial relationship between the adult female and the children is still unknown," Martin, however, told reporters. "We’re working to confirm some facts."
