It has been confirmed that Carolina Muñoz Kennedy made no mistakes during the jump. However, her main parachute malfunctioned and failed to deploy, and she was also unable to save herself with the emergency parachute.
The experienced 40-year-old Chilean skydiver had completed hundreds of jumps. She attempted to deploy the reserve parachute, but it did not open properly, and she fell to the ground.
Numerous rescue services arrived promptly at the scene. Carolina Muñoz Kennedy survived the fall but suffered extensive injuries. In critical condition, she was transported to the hospital. Tragically, doctors were unable to save her life, and the 40-year-old passed away.
Investigators are examining how the tragedy occurred
Investigators are investigating why the parachute malfunctioned and why the emergency component also failed to open correctly. Brazilian prosecutors have also ordered an autopsy.
Interestingly, skydiving is not considered the most dangerous sport in terms of the risk of death. Research conducted for Teton Gravity Research in 2022 indicates that only 1 in 100,000 skydiving cases results in death.
Biking is associated with a similar risk (1 in 140,000). More risky activities include playing American football (1 in 50,000 cases results in death) or kayaking (1 in 10,000).
