Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes and Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway declined to disclose the identities of the shooting victims during a press conference. Rhodes-Conway appealed to journalists, saying, "Just have some human decency. Leave them alone. Let them grieve. Let them recover. Let them heal."
Barnes informed that Rupnow's parents are cooperating with investigators. "We also want to look at if the parents may have been negligent. And that’s a question that we’ll have to answer with our district attorney’s office. But at this time, that does not appear to be the case," Barnes stated on CNN.
Rupnow most likely fatally shot herself. Officers found her dead with the gun. Two students sustained life-threatening injuries. A teacher notified the police about the attack.
Dramatic statistics
The "Washington Post" points out that since the Columbine High massacre in 1999, there have been over 400 shootings in schools. In nine cases, the weapon was used by female students.
