At the end of August, news of the tragedy off the coast of Sicily spread worldwide. A waterspout caused the yacht, belonging to the so-called "British Bill Gates," to sink. Onboard the yacht Bayesian, owned by Michael Lynch, were 22 people, including the billionaire's daughter. Unfortunately, after several hours of searching, the bodies of both the tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were found. The rescue teams were able to save 15 out of the 22 people.
Billionaire's yacht disaster: autopsy results revealed
Among the seven people who lost their lives during the ill-fated celebration at sea were banker Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo. On Thursday, the autopsy results of these four individuals were revealed. According to BBC, citing Italian media, none of the victims had water in their lungs, suggesting they did not die from drowning. Investigators revealed that the cause of death was asphyxiation due to a lack of oxygen.
Italian news services indicate that the bodies were found on the left side of the yacht, where the victims likely sought air as the yacht tilted to the right. Initially, when water began to enter the overturned boat, there were still pockets of air trapped inside. After some time, the oxygen ran out, leading to death by asphyxiation. The bodies showed no signs of injury.
In the coming days, autopsies of other individuals, including Lynch and his daughter, as well as chef Recaldo Thomas, will be conducted. Plans are also in place to raise the yacht from the sea bottom.
