The tornado journeyed approximately 2.5 miles; according to measure devices, the wind inside reached speeds of up to 80 mph. As the tornado grew in strength it began to affect power lines and vessels. More serious damage was reported when large branches fell on a house along its path.
"Our house began to shake, the doors started to rattle, and then the wind really picked up," reported Jody Lewis, a resident whose house was damaged by the tornado.
Possibility of a repeating scenario
Local police continue to survey the area, checking for additional injuries or damages to homes.
Robert Garcia from the National Weather Service warns of potential additional dangerous weather occurrences in this region.
"Many people reported receiving the tornado warning through TV, radio, and cell phones. This allowed them time to seek shelter and ensure their safety," reported Garcia.
Garcia added that this highlights the importance of heeding all weather warnings, regardless of the source.
"We urge everyone to take tornado warnings seriously, regardless of how you receive the warning. Prompt response could save your life or the lives of those you care about," Garcia emphasized.
A representative from NWS noted that tornadoes are not unusual in Florida at this time of the year. They added that the safest response is to shelter at home or other enclosed spaces, away from windows.
