On Monday evening, December 16, police were called to an apartment on Galveston Street SW in Washington. Upon arrival, they found a critically injured five-year-old who had been shot in the abdomen by her three-year-old brother. The girl was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors are fighting to save her life.
The accident occurred when the children were under the supervision of an adult who became preoccupied, leaving the unsecured gun on a table.
The three-year-old started playing with the gun, and when his sister approached, he pulled the trigger. The shot struck the girl in the abdomen.
The children's guardian detained
In connection with the incident, the children's guardian was detained and charged with cruelty toward children. Additionally, a woman suspected of assaulting police officers was arrested. According to the police, the detainee is the sister of the children involved in the shooting.
