TikTok travel hack promises empty airplane seat experience

Traveling by plane can be stressful, especially when you have to spend many hours in a cramped seat. However, according to a popular TikToker, there's a way to increase your chances of having an empty seat next to you. The trick involves carefully selecting the seats you reserve.

According to influencer @skyscanner, there is a strategy to ensure an empty seat next to you on the plane.

How does the trick work?

This strategy works best on planes with rows of three seats. Since no one wants to reserve the middle seat, there is a good chance that if you and a companion reserve the window and aisle seats, the middle seat will remain empty.

Even if someone reserves the middle seat, you can ask to switch seats, which still allows you to sit next to each other.

The effectiveness of the method

Creators on TikTok tested this method on two flights. On the first flight, they managed to have the entire row to themselves, providing extra legroom. On the second flight, they weren't as lucky, but they still sat next to each other. They rated the trick's effectiveness at 50/50 but decided it was worth trying.

Travelers' opinions

The video featuring the trick was watched over 9,000 times, and viewers had mixed opinions. One commenter wrote, "I did this and, despite three empty rows behind us, someone reserved the seat between us." Another added, "I would sit in the middle just to annoy them."

Controversy around the trick

Some believe that this trick might be considered rude, and certain airlines might not permit such reservations. Nevertheless, many influencers are testing this method, and some have succeeded.
