According to a report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), a disturbing trend has emerged on TikTok. Content promoting risky use of steroids is gaining popularity there.
Promotion of dangerous substances on TikTok
The problem mainly concerns profiles, whose topics are aimed at young men (under 24 years of age) and deal with beauty and physical exercise. According to analysts, they mass duplicate recordings tagged with medication hashtags, which contain steroids and are not always legal.
This is extremely disturbing, as these contents have garnered over 580 million views over the past three years. The majority of the audience are boys and young men who have come across them while browsing materials promoting an unrealistic standard of masculinity.
"Effects of Steroid Promotion on TikTok"
The promotion is therefore aimed at recipients whose self-esteem has been effectively lowered before. In this way, they are convinced to use, among others, anabolic-androgenic steroids, peptides, and selective androgen receptor modulators.
Meanwhile, in April of this year, the FDA issued an official warning about the use of steroid-like drugs by teenagers. According to the Agency, this phenomenon has the symptoms of an epidemic, and the substances used have a huge number of side effects. Among them, the FDA lists psychosis, an increased risk of heart attacks, and infertility.
