The IEA service reports that at the end of last year there were 2.7 million public charging points worldwide, of which over 900,000 were built in 2022. After building more than a million additional public charging stations since 2019, China has invested the most in electric vehicle infrastructure over the past few years. However, a chart published by the Statista portal shows that South Korea is the leader in terms of the number of public charging stations per 1,000 plug-in electric vehicles.
According to IEA data, at the end of 2022, there were 201,000 public charging stations in South Korea for 357,000 plug-in electric cars, which means 563 charging stations per electric car. This is by far the most of any of the largest electric vehicle markets in the world.
China, with 1.76 million charging points, accounts for nearly two-thirds of the world's public charging infrastructure, but due to its vast vehicle fleet, it only ranks third in terms of the number of chargers per electric vehicle on the roads. The Netherlands is in second place in this respect with 235 public chargers per 1,000 electric cars. Rounding out the list of eight countries with the most public charging stations are France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and Norway.
