Bobi was born on May 11, 1992. He spent his entire life in the village of Conqueiros in the Leiria district in Portugal.

At first, nothing indicated that Bobi would lead a happy, long life. When he came into the world, there were three puppies in the litter. The owners decided to get rid of the dogs, but Bobi clearly foresaw what might happen and... he escaped. The children of the dog owners helped him survive.

When the parents realized that the children were keeping a dog hidden, feeding it, and taking care of it, they decided to keep the animal. It was a tough beginning to a beautiful friendship between man and dog. A friendship, which lasted for 31 years.

Today, the pet owner Leonel Costa is a 39-year-old man. When Bobi was born, Leonel was just 8 years old.

In February, Bobi was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest quadruped in the world. His age was confirmed by the Portuguese government's pet database, run by the National Association of Veterinary Doctors. It turns out that Bobi lived exactly 31 years and 4 months.

Bobi passed away on October 21. The death of the dog was announced yesterday by Dr. Karen Becker, a veterinarian.

The dog's owner, when asked about the secret of his pet's longevity, said that the dog led a peaceful life, loved good food, had veterinary care provided, and moreover... knew he was loved. But Bobi also owed his long life to his genes. Bobi's mother — a representative of the Portuguese guard dog breed Rafeiro do Alentejo — lived for 18 years.
