The Rock's 'Red One' stumble: Nolan comparison misfires

The Rock was accused of inflating the production costs of "Red One" by an additional $50 million due to his star behavior. Reports say Johnson was habitually late to shoots, which extended the crew's working hours, resulting in extra expenses. Additionally, it's been reported that he urinates into bottles on set. The star recently addressed these claims, confirming the bottle use but denying being late or causing disruptions. However, it appears that American media are beginning to view The Rock negatively, mainly due to his boastful comments about "Red One."
The Rock compared to Christopher Nolan
What is "Red One" about? Following the kidnapping of Santa Claus, the head of security at the North Pole (played by Dwayne Johnson) must team up with a notorious bounty hunter (Chris Evans) for a mission to save Christmas. It's a typical action film aiming to provide family entertainment in theaters during the pre-holiday season. It fits into the trend of unique holiday films that contrast traditional Christmas romantic comedies. In 2022, a similar production was "Violent Night" starring David Harbour.
"Red One" is receiving poor reviews. Meanwhile, The Rock has boldly stated that after watching "Oppenheimer" in IMAX, sitting in the same seat as Christopher Nolan, he desired the same cinematic experience for his production. "Legitimately, the biggest screens possible are Imax. I was midway through shooting Red One, and I had an opportunity to see Oppenheimer. It was amazing, but I was thinking: 'Red One on this screen and with this technology could be game over,'" he remarked in an interview.
However, "Red One" has not achieved success on the level of Nolan’s film. "Oppenheimer" garnered nearly a billion dollars worldwide and won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and for actors Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.
On the other hand, "Red One," with a budget of $250 million, earned only $26 million during its international premiere. The film will be released in U.S. theaters on November 15, but forecasts predict a weak opening, around $20 million.
Critics have not been kind to the production either. Owen Gleiberman from "Variety" wrote in his review: "I'm not sure that a Hollywood movie has ever kicked off the season with less true Christmas spirit than 'Red One.'"
