Ferrari has a long-standing tradition of offering its discerning customers racing versions of its production models. The most recent examples are the 296 Challenge and the 499P Modificata, both successors to the extraordinary 288 GTB Evoluzione. The latter was made in extremely limited numbers – just five in total. And, the unique road-legal example among those five is the one up for grabs.
The Evoluzione variant was developed based on the standard 288 GTO to cater to the rise in popularity of the Group B rallying. Driven by this, the Italians introduced an aggressive aerodynamic package composed of fiberglass and Kevlar, along with a substantial rear wing. A weight-reduction strategy was also enforced, eliminating a surplus of 485 lbs. Consequently, the weight of the 288 GTB Evoluzione was reduced to a mere 2072 lbs.
All these modifications, paired with a monstrous, 2.9-liter V6 engine that produces whopping 650 HP in the track variant and over 400 HP in the rally configuration, make this car quite the beast. Regrettably, the discontinuation of Group B led to the premature end of this promising project.
Of the five total units manufactured, a mere three possessed a maximum output of 650 HP. The one currently on sale is among these three. Moreover, it stands alone in its ability to legally hit the roads.
The unique vehicle has recently been listed for sale by the auction house Tom Hartley Jnr. While the asking price remains undisclosed, sources speculate its probable estimate to be around £4.4 million.
