The new RAM 1500 heralds a hybrid future, waves goodbye to V8

The iconic, deep-throated rumble of the V8 engine fades into the past, even for pickups. This holds true for the new RAMs: the HEMI V8 engines have been replaced by the inline Hurricane family in the new generation. Moreover, a hybrid vehicle has been introduced into the lineup, even though the internal combustion unit won't be driving the wheels.

It's as if hell is freezing over. The trend of downsizing and widespread electrification continues, extending its influence to even the most resistant segments. RAM recently unveiled the new 1500 pickup, presenting simultaneously a revamped engine lineup that upends long-held customer habits.

The new pickup will not feature a V8 engine. The Hurricane family has replaced the HEMI engines. The inline engine has a comparatively "modest" capacity of approximately 183 cubic inches from the previous 5.7 liters and is powered by two turbochargers. Two versions will be available, with the less powerful generating 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque.

The more potent version boasts 540 horsepower, and 520 lb-ft of torque and will be featured in the new sporty RHO version. Set to debut in the third quarter of 2024, it's expected to replace the outgoing, thoroughbred TRX, despite its notably lower power than the 702-horsepower beast. The end of its model has been expected for a while, so RAM has prepared a limited-edition farewell series.

However, the base engine remains unchanged. It's still a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower. All engines will be paired with an 8-speed automatic, and customers have the option to choose one of the three rear axle ratios (3.21, 3.55, or 3.92).

The vehicle also boasts an air suspension with double wishbones at the front and an electronic rear differential lock. RAM claims the gasoline model can tow 11,680 lbs and carry around 2315 lbs of cargo.

There's more to the new drivetrain selection. Alongside the classic REV electric, RAM has introduced the Ramcharger, a hybrid with a range extender where the gasoline engine doesn't directly drive the wheels. American engineers didn't skimp on components; they project the car's total range to exceed an impressive 680 miles.

This is expected to be achievable due to a battery of up to 92 kWh and a fuel tank of approximately 27 gallons. The adoption of the new STLA platform with a flat-mounted battery between the longitudinal frame elements enabled such a sophisticated architecture.

The vehicle employs a 177-horsepower 3.6 V6 Pentastar engine as a power generator. The current from the unit and the battery powers two electric motors - a 340-horsepower motor at the front (automatically disconnected) and a 323-horsepower one at the rear. If a charger is available, the RAM's battery can be recharged at a steady rate of up to 145 kW.

The Ramcharger demonstrates even better utility features than the gasoline model. It increases towing capacity to around 14,000 lbs (best in class) and boosts payload to nearly 2646 lbs. Moreover, its high power contributes to impressive acceleration – reaching 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Changes extend beyond engines only

The Americans didn't confine their innovation only to the engine. They also introduced modifications to the interior and exterior. Exterior modifications stay true to the previous stylistic direction by smoothing some lines, applying new headlights, and retouching the radiator grill. They've also added an electrically operated truck bed cover. There are more significant changes inside the cockpit.

The driver will experience a new, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, with a 14.5-inch display for the new UConnect 5 system as the infotainment center. The redesign doesn't end with these displays – there's another 10.25-inch screen, equipped with an HDMI port, installed for the passenger's comfort.

RAM also takes pride in improved assembly standards and superior-quality materials. Alongside luxurious add-ons like 24-way adjustable seats, massage features, and a 1228-watt audio system, the RAM also features outlets for connecting external devices required for work.

Pricing details are still under wraps. The new RAM 1500 will hit American dealerships in the first quarter of 2024.
