She is young, photogenic, and intelligent. She has a tendency to threaten nuclear attacks against South Korea and is undoubtedly the most powerful woman in North Korea today. What is known about Kim Jong Un's sister?

When North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sat down to sign the guest book at a space center as part of a significant meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a young woman casually leaned over his shoulder to peek at the message.

In a group made up mainly of men, she definitely attracted attention. Kim Jo Dzong is the younger sister of the North Korean leader and one of the most important political advisors in the country.

The youngest of the dynasty

Kim Yo Jong is the youngest of seven children of the previous supreme leader of North Korea, Kim Jong II. She is the first prominent and powerful female figure to appear on the brutal, male-dominated political landscape of North Korea, ruled by the Kim dynasty for 75 years. She is the second most important member of the family, only subordinate to her brother, Kim Jong Un.

Sung-Yoon Lee, who has been learning everything possible about North Korea for 20 years, told CNN about the drastic metamorphosis of Kim Yo Jong.

"Chief censor, spokeswoman, mocker and sower of threats"

This is how the author of the book "Sister" described Kim Jong Un's sister. In an interview with CNN, Sung-Yoon Lee pointed out how the Kim dynasty member has changed her behavior since 2018. It was then that the dictator's sister appeared on a historic visit to South Korea, where the Winter Olympic Games were being held.

- As the first member of her family to set foot in the South since the end of the Korean War, she has become a key spokesperson for the regime - noted Lee.

Although Jo Dzong captivated a significant part of South Korea during the Olympics, and her visit had a peaceful message, in recent years her behavior has changed. She transformed from a lofty, but not rude princess, into a brutal monarch leader reminiscent of medieval times.

- She mocked the Seoul president's office and the government representatives working there. She believed that they were parroting the USA, and she called Joe Biden "outdated" - said Sung-Yoon Lee on CNN.

Kim Jong Un's sister, in June 2020, issued a written statement in which she called on South Korea to adopt a new law that penalizes the sending of pamphlets, money, medicines, toothpaste, etc. across the border with the North. For years, human rights defenders have been sending materials to the north via balloons. South Korea adopted the new law, despite growing criticism from citizens and the United Nations.

It has been recognized globally as the first successful instance of extending the stifling North Korean censorship beyond the border with the South. Neither the grandfather, father, nor even brother Kim Yo Jong was able to do this. The dictator's sister also threatened to blow up the North-South Joint Liaison Office, located north of the inter-Korean border and entirely funded by South Korea. It was demolished a few days later.

According to the convention, power should be transferred to one of Kim Jong Un's children, not his siblings. But Kim Yo Jong is increasingly taking advantage of her position, and it is unknown what her future will be.
