The hidden cost of constantly plugging in your laptop

Because of their portability, laptops have become essential tools for office work. We can take them anywhere in the world, as long as the battery isn't depleted. Unfortunately, some people tend to keep their laptops constantly plugged into a power outlet, which can lead to unpleasant consequences.

Over time, laptops have dominated the computer market. Due to their lightweight design, ease of use, and ability to function practically anywhere, many of us have chosen these devices. However, a common mistake is always leaving the laptop plugged in, which can negatively affect the battery's lifespan. What are the rules for charging a laptop? Does it lead to significant costs?

Why is it worth unplugging the laptop?

The frequency of charging a laptop depends on many factors, including the device's specifications and use. Gaming laptops typically require more frequent charging than basic office tasks. Nevertheless, one fundamental rule has been established: connect the computer to power when the battery level drops below 10%.

It might be worth reviewing your habits if you rarely unplug your laptop from the charger. Although continuous charging while the device is turned off does not result in high energy costs — only a few cents per year — it can significantly impact the battery's health, causing it to wear out faster with constant charging.

Extended charging and battery condition

Charging a laptop for extended periods can decrease battery performance. Right after reaching a full charge, the battery's energy level naturally drops to about 95%. The problem occurs when the battery doesn't have a chance to discharge partially and remains plugged in too long.

As a result, it starts losing its capacity faster than one might expect, which leads to more frequent charging being required after only a short period of use without access to power. To help your laptop last longer, charge it only when it's genuinely necessary.
