The devastating earthquake in Nepal occurred late local time on Friday, which was mid-afternoon in our local timezone. According to reports from the Polish Press Agency (PAP), accredited to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the disaster's epicenter was located 11 miles deep, near the border with China, roughly 24 miles south from the city of Jumla.
Terrifying death toll
The quake resulted in the deaths of over 130 people and injured another 100. Local authorities have warned that the final fatality count may escalate, as several people are still under the rubble. The disaster-stricken area has been isolated from the rest of the world, impeding rescue operations. Roads have been rendered impassable due to the rubble and a landslide of earth and rocks triggered by the earthquake.
Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, a spokesperson for Nepal's Ministry of Home Affairs, reported to AFP that "92 people died in Jajarkot and 40 in Rukum".
Disturbing footage surfaces
Social media has been flooded with footage showcasing the immense scale of the destruction. The videos depict completely collapsed buildings, blocked roads and people sifting through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors.
One such video captures the moment the earthquake struck. It showcases panicked individuals fleeing from buildings while one of the surveilling cameras in a store records as shelves begin to violently shake and merchandise tumbles to the floor.
