Teriyaki chicken is a regular feature on the menus of Asian restaurants. It is characterized by an unusually sweet and salty taste, making it approachable enough to win fans beyond lovers of Asian flavors. Combined with rice, it turns into a delicious and filling meal.

What is teriyaki?

Teriyaki is primarily associated with a sauce, but it is actually a whole Japanese technique involving grilling or baking meat with a tare marinade. This marinade is the secret of the entire dish and its characteristic sweet and salty flavor.

The main ingredients of tare are soy sauce, sugar or honey, and sake, which is Japanese rice wine. You can also add mirin (sweet rice wine) to the marinade and various spices such as ginger, garlic, or sesame. The marinade and spices can be used for chicken and tofu, beef, pork, or vegetables.
