The incident occurred as part of planned maneuvers. The American B-52 bombers were in the region for exercises with Finland, which became a NATO member in 2023.
The aim of the joint exercises with Finnish F/A-18C fighters was to enhance Finland's defensive capabilities. The activities took place in Finnish airspace, as confirmed by the Finnish Air Force in a conversation with Reuters.
Russian Su-27 fighters intercepted the B-52 bombers a few days after Russia used a ballistic missile against Ukraine. The American news outlet "Voice of America" noted this situation, highlighting the increasing tensions in the region.
A White House representative stated that the bombers did not alter their designated flight path during the interception. The incident was deemed safe and professional, posing no threat to either side.
Finland did not officially comment on Russian fighters' interception of American bombers. However, the Finnish Air Force emphasized that cooperation with the U.S. aims to increase the country's security and defense capabilities.
