Tensions rise as China, Philippines confront over shoal
Incident in the South China Sea. A Chinese coast guard vessel fired water cannons at a Philippine patrol. The authorities of the Philippines accuse the unit of "aggressive action," while China calls "to stop infringement activities and provocations."
The Philippine patrol was sailing towards Scarborough Shoal. According to the Philippine coast guard, at one point, a Chinese ship approached them and fired strong water cannons.
The Chinese coast guard argues that the Filipinos ignored "warnings" and then deliberately collided with their ship. Beijing calls on Manila to "stop infringement activities and provocations."
Both countries claim rights to the shoal. It has been taken over by China, making it difficult for Filipino fishermen to access it. Incidents involving the coast guards of both countries occur regularly.
