Tejas Mk1A jets to bolster Indian Air Force by 2025
The Indian Air Force is soon to receive its first Tejas Mk1A fighters, despite previous delivery issues. This information was reported by the Spanish-language service Zona Militar.
The Indian Air Force is preparing to introduce the first Tejas Mk1A fighters into its fleet. During the Aero India 2025 exhibition, which took place from February 10-14, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) showcased four of these aircraft. They participated in an air show observed by India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. This marks another step in the Asian country's shift away from Russian armaments.
Delivery issues
The first contract for the delivery of 73 Tejas Mk1A fighters and 10 training aircraft was signed in 2021. The $6.5 billion contract was the largest of its kind in India's history. Last autumn, there were plans to order an additional 97 aircraft for $7.7 billion. However, due to delays in deliveries, India still relies on obsolete Soviet-era MiG-21 fighters.
Delays in the delivery of the Tejas Mk1A were caused by issues with the supply of engines from GE Aerospace. The four aircraft that participated in the show were equipped with engines from a previous agreement. A conflict between HAL's management and the Air Force Chief, Marshal Amar Prith Singh, also affected the situation. Singh expressed a lack of trust in HAL.
The future of Indian aviation
Despite the difficulties, India plans to continue investing in the development of its aviation sector. The introduction of the Tejas Mk1A aims to modernize the fleet and increase independence from foreign suppliers. It was previously reported that India is interested in purchasing American F-35s and other advanced military technologies.
The country faces the challenge of modernizing its air fleet, which is crucial for its national security. The introduction of the Tejas Mk1A is a step toward modernization and enhancing the combat capabilities of India's air force.
