The teenager accused of murdering three children during dance lessons in Southport, United Kingdom, has been identified as Axel Muganwa Rudakubana. He stood in court facing charges of murder and attempted murder.
The tragedy in England claimed the lives of Bebe King (6 years old), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7 years old), and 9-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar; eight other children and two adults sustained knife injuries. Five children are still fighting for their lives in the hospital.
Despite Rudakubana’s young age, Judge Andrew Menary KC rejected the accused's anonymity to prevent the spread of misinformation.
This is an extraordinary step, considering Rudakubana is only 17 years old. However, the judge deemed full disclosure necessary in light of the accused's upcoming 18th birthday.
The teenager, born in Cardiff to a family from Rwanda, has been transported to a detention center. The trial in his case will begin in January next year.
The knife attack caused riots across the country
The attack on the participants of the dance workshops in Southport sparked a wave of riots throughout the country. The local community is calling for peace, but in response to the attack, there have been acts of violence in many cities, including damage and clashes with the police.
Parents of the victims, who condemned the violence, have also voiced their opinions. Although false information appeared in the media regarding the accused’s status as an asylum seeker, the police are still investigating to determine the motives for this tragic act.
